16th Annual Gulf Coast International Dragon Boat Regatta

Sugar Land has become a hot bed for water activity especially Dragon Boating. Thanks to the continued partnership of The City of Sugar Land, First Colony Community Services Association (FCCSA), Hyatt Place, and Fluor, Brooks Lake has become one of the most favored spots for paddlers from across the area as well as neighboring states. This year we expect teams from around the nation to register as participants in the 16th Annual Gulf Coast International Dragon Boat Regatta – an annual event which promotes the tradition of dragon boating.

Every year in October, The Texas Dragon Boat Association hosts its Annual Gulf Coast International Dragon Boat Regatta. This year’s event will be held October 12 – 13 from 8:30 am – 4 pm at Brooks Lake at Fluor Campus (1 Fluor Daniel) in Sugar Land. Over 50 teams participate in this event which promotes the tradition of dragon boating. Corporate, community, youth, breast cancer survivor, and competitive teams paddle the waters of Brooks Lake in the fastest growing water sport. This free family event has come to be known as one of the largest multicultural and team-building activities in Fort Bend County- bringing over 5,000 visitors.

There are activities both on water and land which increases awareness of Asian and Asian American culture. On water, boats with 20 paddlers, a drummer and a steersperson paddle the waters to cross the finish line faster than their competitors. On land, there are multi-cultural performances, children’s activities, and samplings of Asian cuisine for spectators.

FCCSA is once again an in-kind sponsor for the Dragon Boat Regatta. We are looking for team members to paddle our boat and help us to win the race! The time requirement is Saturday, October 12th from 8:00 am – 4 pm and a practice time a week or so before the race (date and time TBD). Please e-mail Farha Ahmed at farha@windstream.net if you would like to participate.
